Welcome to the RRG Home Page

The Trauma & Rehabilitation RRG is one of several groups receiving core funding from the Research & Development Office of the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety in Northern Ireland.

Purpose

The Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG exists to carry out research, the aim of which is to improve the care of patients suffering from the effects of trauma or diseases of the musculoskeletal system or to discover means of preventing such trauma or disease.

The Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG will also conduct research and development in radiological imaging methodologies deployed in the management of trauma and musculoskeletal conditions.

Theme Groups

Executive Committee

There shall be an Executive Committee, consisting of the Convenor, Deputy Convenor, Secretary, Deputy Secretary and three Executive Members.

The role of the Executive Committee is:

  • to control the development of the RRG
  • to determine the agenda for Business Meetings of the RRG
  • to determine the programme of Scientific Meetings of the RRG
  • to decide the deployment of Cohesion Funds
  • to advise the Convenor on the preparation of the Annual Report
  • The Executive Committee shall normally meet every two months. Extraordinary meetings may be called at any time, at the discretion of the Convenor.

    The Executive Committee shall not take decisions unless a quorum of four members is present.

    Executive Members

    Membership

    Full Members
    Full members will be Principal Investigators who are prepared to commit themselves to the aims of the Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG and abide by its constitution. “Principal Investigators”, as described in the Research Governance Framework, are investigators who have experience as leaders in designing, funding and conducting scientific studies.

    Associate Members
    Associate members will be junior investigators who are engaged in research that is within the remit of the Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG, under the supervision of a PI.

    Register of members
    The Secretary shall keep a register of Full and Associate Members of the Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG. The initial list of full members will be defined as those invited to attend the inaugurating Away Day held in Portaferry in June 2002. Subsequent additions to the membership list shall be made by simple majority vote of Full Members at a Business Meeting, following applications made in writing to the Secretary.

    Removal of names
    Members may ask the Secretary to remove their name from the membership list at any time. A member may be expelled from the Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG, on grounds of bringing the organisation into disrepute, by a two-thirds majority vote at an Annual or Extraordinary General Meeting, providing that all Full Members have been informed of the intention to do so at least 2 weeks before the meeting takes place.

    Associate Members

    Officers

    Convenor

    There shall be a Convenor, whose term of office will be two years, and whose role is:

  • to call and chair all meetings of the Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG
  • to call and chair meetings of the Executive Committee to represent the Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG in dealings with the R&D Office and others
  • to lead the development of the Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG
  • to submit an Annual Report to the R&D Office
  • Deputy Convenor

    There shall be a Deputy Convenor, whose term of office shall be two years, and whose role is to deputise for the Convenor whenever necessary.

    Secretary

    There shall be a Secretary, whose term of office shall be two years, changing in alternate years to the Convenor, whose role is:

  • to send out agendas and minutes of all Business Meetings of the Trauma and Rehabilitation RRG
  • to maintain the list of members
  • to organise elections of officers and Executive Members
  • to coordinate the timetable of Scientific Meetings
  • Deputy Secretary

    There shall be a Deputy Secretary, whose term of office shall be two years, and whose role is to deputise for the Secretary whenever necessary

    Executive Members

    There shall be three Executive Members, whose term of office shall be two years, and whose role is to help the Officers fulfill the role of the Executive Committee.

    Officers and Executive Members shall normally be elected at the Annual General Meeting. In exceptional circumstances (eg an unexpected vacancy), the Executive Committee may arrange elections at an Extraordinary General Meeting called for the purpose.

    The Secretary shall notify Full Members of vacancies at least 2 weeks in advance. Any Full Member is eligible to stand for any officer’s position The RRG shall endeavour to balance the composition of the Executive Committee, in terms of thematic areas, institutions and disciplines, by encouragement of appropriate people to stand for office. Nominations, proposed and seconded by Full Members, shall be handed to the Secretary at anby time before the meeting commences. Election shall be by simple majority in a show of hands, candidates having been asked to leave the meeting briefly. If only one person is proposed for a post, that person shall be elected unopposed.

    Meetings

    Business Meetings shall be held every two months, organised by the Executive Committee. Additional Business Meetings may be called by the Executive Committee at any time if the necessity arises. Full Members and Associate Members may attend, but only Full Members may vote. Their purpose is to allow the Executive Committee to inform and consult the membership on the development of the RRG, the use of cohesion funds and the programme of scientific meetings.

    The Business Meeting held in or around June each year shall be the Annual General Meeting, at which elections shall be held. The Executive Committee may declare any other business meeting to be an Extraordinary General Meeting, at which elections and other matters normally considered at an AGM may be dealt with. The Executive must give the membership at least two weeks’ notice of an AGM or an EGM and its agenda.

    Scientific meetings shall be held at the discretion of the Executive Committee. Any member may organise a Scientific Meeting, but it can only be officially designated an RRG meeting and be supported by Cohesion Funds if it has been endorsed by the Executive Committee.

    The purpose of Scientific Meetings is to educate in the field of Trauma and Rehabilitation research and to further the development of the research programmes of the RRG.

    Annual Retreat. The Executive Committee shall organise each year a retreat, at which Full Members will review the progress of the RRG.

    Cohesion Funds

    Cohesion funds may be used for any purpose that the Executive Committee deems to be necessary to develop the scientific work of the RRG, for which there is no more appropriate source of funding, provided that the purpose is allowed by the rules applied by the R&D Office at the time.

    Such purposes include:

  • support of Scientific Meetings
  • external peer-review of research groups within the RRG
  • training of members in techniques which will enhance the scientific work of the RRG
  • purchase of services to develop the work of the RRG
  • employment of secretarial help in running the RRG
  • Such purposes would not normally include the employment of research staff.

    Any Full Member may suggest a use for Cohesion Funds, in writing (eg email) to the Executive Committee, who will take the decision

    Constitution and Amendments

    Constitutional amendments can only be made at an AGM or an EGM. Therefore the membership must be given at least two week’s notice of any intention to amend the Constitution.

    Amendments must be proposed and seconded by Full Members and be submitted in writing to the Secretary. The Secretary is responsible for circulating proposed amendments to the membership.

    The decision to amend the Constitution must be taken by two-thirds majority vote
