Learning Sets

Would you like some additional support to develop your research ideas? Are you considering applying for a Research Fellowship or other research funding? Unsure about the process involved in writing a research proposal? If so, then you may be interested in joining the new Research & Development Office Learning Sets initiative, which aims to support those wishing to develop an initial research idea into a full research funding proposal. A Learning Set is a group or 'set' of colleagues, who meet every four to six weeks over a period of around 10 months, under the guidance of an experienced facilitator. Members work together using processes of reflection, challenge and support and work-based learning to develop their research proposal during the series of Learning Set meetings

Health & Social Care Services Research Studentship Scheme

These 4-year studentships are intended to build capacity for Health & Social Care Services Research (HSCSR) in Northern Ireland. They will assist the individual to develop a career in HSCSR by undertaking one year of general research training and by following a three year programme leading to a PhD.

Building R&D Capacity in Nursing

One of the key functions of the Programme Manager for Nursing is to build R&D capacity within the nursing professions, focusing on the provision and uptake of research training for nurses, midwives and health visitors currently working in the HPSS. A framework developed to pursue this objective is detailed in the document entitled Building R&D Capacity in Nursing which was widely disseminated in February 2000.

Personal Bursary Scheme

This scheme provides support to undertake a training course in research for individuals currently working within the HPSS.

Doctoral Fellowship Scheme

The fellowships provide support including salary to undertake research training leading to a higher degree (eg, PhD, MD, Professional Doctorates), as a means of developing a research career in the health and social care areas.

Those eligible to apply for these awards are individuals currently employed in or by the HPSS or in voluntary/not-for-profit organisations in Northern Ireland involved in health or social care provision, including health and social care managers, medical staff, GPs, nurses, allied health professionals, pharmacists, dentists, social workers and other independent contractors. The awardee must continue to be employed within the HPSS or the voluntary/not-for-profit organisation for the duartion of the Fellowship.

The applicant should have been accepted by an academic institution before applying to the R&D Office for support, but should not have formally commenced their research training i.e. have already registered. A fellowship should only be supported where it is based in, or linked to, designated research units, centres, institutes or departments with a good track record in training and research.
